Welcome to Tribhangi Dance Theatre
Tribhangi means 'three bends in a body', we celebrate and demonstrate this with our unique presentation, challenging experimentation, enthusiasm and energy – hallmarks of every Tribhangi performance.
Tribhangi Dance Theatre has two main projects: Tribhangi Dance School and Tribhangi Dance Theatre. The Dance School was started in 1988 as a dance centre where Bharatha Natyam could be fostered and the traditions of Classical Indian Dance kept alive. The Tribhangi Dance Theatre was started in 1989, the founding members being Hanita Muthray, Bashni Muthaya, Tanusha Naidoo and Jayesperi Moopen. The original goals of the company were to exchange ideas within the Indian Dance sector, to give this art form a public profile and to make the Classical Indian Dance discipline accessible to a wider audience.
We journey through our art form, we experiment, we explore and we challenge notions of what Indian Dance is. Our aim is to present work that is intelligible in content, unique in presentation and challenging in its experimentation.
Tribhangi believes that dance and related arts are vital in bringing about awareness and understanding of other dance forms and cultures. Dance is vital in articulating the experiences of all areas of society. As a tool, dance is an international dialogue against a backdrop of migration, xenophobia and diaspora.
Our uniqueness lies in our boldness to constantly take risks when creating dance work that is meaningful and significant in an ever changing environment. Our works seeks to reflect a profound sensitivity, respect, understanding and knowledge of the cultures we engage with through dance. Our repertoire therefore includes African, Indian, Contemporary and Afro-fusion.
Tribhangi has toured extensively locally and internationally, performing in Mauritius, Lesotho, Botswana, Egypt, Germany, India, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, Malaysia and Canada and many parts of South Africa.
